A tool roll with two rows of pockets. This would work with a variety of fabrics, but my favorite combination is X-Pac on the outside with a 1000D Cordura lining.

All seam allowances are 12", unless otherwise indicated.
Directions are relative to a an open tool roll with the closure flap facing up, as shown in Figure 1.

Fabric Pieces

Outer Fabric

  • Main Body: 25" x 15"

The X-Pac orientation isn’t important, but I prefer the selvedge to be parallel to the piece’s short edge.
  • (2) Tool Pockets: 25" x 5 12"

The X-Pac orientation should match the main body.
  • Closure Flap: 14" x 4"

The X-Pac orientation should be perpendicular to the main body.

Lining Fabric

  • Main Body: 25" x 15"

  • (2) Tool Pockets: 25" x 5 12"

  • Closure Flap: 14" x 4"

  • (2) Binding Strips: 26" x 2"

Other Materials

  • 1" tubular nylon webbing: 18"

  • (2) Side-release buckles

  • (2) Sliders

Sewing Instructions

Prepare the Closure Flap

  1. Place the closure flap outer and lining together, right sides together.

  2. Mark 1 12" from the top corners on the left, right, and top edges.

  3. Sew around three edges, leaving the bottom open. Stop at each 1 12" mark and sew the corner diagonally to the adjacent mark.

  4. Trim the corners.

  5. Turn the flap right side out.

  6. Topstitch at 14" along the three seams.

Prepare the Pockets

  1. Place a pocket outer and lining together, right sides together.

  2. Sew along one of the long edges.

  3. Turn the pocket right side out.

  4. Topstitch at 14" along the seam.

  5. Repeat for the other pocket.

Sew the Flap and Pockets to the Main Body

  1. Place the main body outer piece right side up.

  2. Place the closure flap on the body, lining side up.

  3. Place the pockets on the body, lining side up.

  4. Place the main body lining on the body, wrong side up.

  5. Sew along the two short edges of the main body.

  6. Turn the body right side out.

Sew the Handle to the Main Body

  1. Pin the nylon webbing strap across the body outer at 4 12" from the top edge of the main body.

Sew the strap to the outer and lining of the body only—don’t sew through the pockets.
  2. Sew the strap to the body with a 1 12" box stitch starting at 1" from the body edge.

  3. Sew a second 1" box stitch starting 1 12" from the first box stitch.

  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 on the other side of the strap.

Sew the Pocket Dividers

  1. Topstitch horizontally across the pocket.

  2. Place a bartack on the inside edge of the topstitching.

  3. Repeat for each pocket.

Sew the Edge Binding

  1. Align the pockets with the main body, with the linings together.

  2. Place a binding strip on top of the pocket so that the outside edges line up.

  3. Fold the short edges of the binding strip over so that the wrong sides are together and the short edges line up with the top and bottom of the body.

  4. Sew along the outside edge at about 38".

  5. Fold the binding strip over the edge and sew in the gutter of the previous seam.

  6. Repeat on the other side of the case.

Sew the Buckles to the Webbing Straps

  1. Sew one side of a closure strap around the fixed end of a side-release buckle.

  2. Thread the strap beneath the handle webbing.

  3. Thread the strap through the adjustable end of the buckle.
